Bengals Hold 9th Place in First Round of Big Sky Championships

Phoenix, AZ--The Idaho State women's golf team held ninth place in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Championship at the Foothills Golf Club Monday morning. The last time the Bengals took the title was in 1994 when they shot a three-round score of 968. Idaho State is currently ranked 211th in the nation.

The Bengals shot a combined first round score of 336 (+48) to hold ninth place. Senior Hannah Venn leads the way with a score of 76 (+4) to tie for ninth place. She shares a par 5 scoring average of 4.50 (-2) with freshman Kylie Smith. Venn successfully made 10 pars during her first round and two birdies. In 2006, she tied for 27th place in the Big Sky Championships.

Smith shot an 87 (+15) in her first round to tie for 41st place. Smith made two birdies during her first day of competition. Junior Ally Hall who also shot an 87 (+15) is tied with Smith for 41st place. Hall captured 39th place in the 2007 Big Sky Championships. Freshman Sadie Venn shot an 89 in her first round for seventeen over par.

Leading the conference is Eastern Washington with a combined first round score of 300 (+12). Heading up the individual lead is Eastern Washington's Kellie Holmstedt with a first round score of 71 (-1). Homstedt is the only person who shot under par in the first round. Second place is held by Portland State's Hannah Bews with a score of 73, one over par.

The second round begins Tuesday at 6:52 a.m. and concludes on Wednesday. Freshman Venn will be the first Bengal on the course starting at hole number one. She is paired with Brittany Roberts of Weber State and Hillary Folkvord of Montana State. Senior Venn will have a tee time of 7:22 a.m. and will be the last Bengal to tee off. Venn is paired with Ericka Baldwin of Weber State and LaRae Smith of Montana State.
